I kept pushing my elbows into my sides, thinking that was the correct way to stay in control. But all that effort made my playing stiff, inefficient, and uncomfortable.
So many pianists, especially those who learned through traditional posture rules, unknowingly restrict their natural movement.
When you push the elbows inward to reach the opposite side of the keyboard, you create unnecessary tension in the shoulders and chest. This tension limits your ability to move smoothly across octaves and phrases.
Instead, think of your arm as moving in a wide, natural arc crossing over the body rather than pushing in. This allows the shoulder, elbow, and wrist to cooperate effortlessly. The motion becomes free, balanced, and expressive.
Once I stopped pushing and started allowing, I felt immediate relief. It wasn’t just more efficient, it was deeply liberating.
My sound opened up, my transitions between registers became smoother, and my shoulders no longer ached after long practice sessions.
If you’ve been struggling with tension or stiffness, this might be the missing piece. The truth is inefficient movement at the piano doesn’t come from weakness, it comes from overcontrol. We often try too hard, when what we need is to allow our body to move naturally.
Here’s what you can try right now
🎹 Sit comfortably at the piano.
🫱 Let your arm extend naturally across the keyboard without tucking your elbow in.
🫶 Feel how much easier it is for your shoulder to guide your hand freely across the keys.
This simple shift frees up your arm movement, releases shoulder tension, and makes your technique more fluid. It’s not about pushing it’s about releasing.
If you’ve been told to keep your elbows close or sit still while playing, try questioning that. The most efficient piano movement comes from coordinated freedom, not rigid stability.
Learning to move efficiently is one of the most rewarding discoveries any pianist can make. When the body is free, the music flows naturally and every phrase feels alive.
So if you’ve been playing with tension or struggling to move easily across the keyboard, try this today. Notice how it feels. You might just find it as liberating as I did.
