Maresca explained his decision to rest Moisés Caicedo in a Premier League game for the first time and insisted “it’s the last time” after Andrey Santos impressed in the deeper midfield role. He praised Pedro Neto, Enzo Fernández, Jamie Gittens and Marc Cucurella for their attacking contributions, stressed that he prefers goals to be shared across the front five rather than relying on a 40 goal striker, and highlighted the importance of full backs and midfielders filling the box to create chaos in the opposition area.

He spoke about managing minutes for Reece James and others after the international break, described Burnley away at 12 o’clock as a very tricky game on a pitch that “looks small”, and underlined the pressure of the Chelsea job by admitting that when you lose one game and if you lose two “it’s a huge crisis”. Maresca also joked that if Estevao is disappointed not to play he “is not playing Tuesday” as Chelsea prepare for a big midweek game.
