I'm still taking in how awesome it was to witness Alco S2 #3021 on the D&H Freight Mainline. On November 23rd, 2022, I was railfanning around the CP-NS-Pan Am Freight Mainline when I heard that Pan Am/B&M XO-1 would be making a special move from Mechanicville to Mohawk Yard.
In this special feature we look at the history of this special Alco locomotive before following the ferry move from Mechanicville. 3021 was once a U.S. Army locomotive before working on the Staten Island as 821. After being acquired by the Upper Hudson River Railroad and being transferred to the Saratoga & North Creek, proprietor Hal T. Raven purchased the unit and moved it to Shushan, NY. Here we see the now relettered and restored 3021 heading from the Batten Kill to Hal's tourist operation, the Saratoga Corinth & Hudson.
The "James F. Lafayette" is an ex-Penn Central bay window caboose that was acquired by Raven Rail at the same time as the 821. Named for our mutual late friend, the caboose is expected to add more interest to the SC&H. The caboose is lettered for the Greenwich & Johnsonville, a shortline in Washington County and a predecessor to the Batten Kill.
