🏁🎙️ Nipsey Hussle – “Racks In The Middle” (but the Marathon started in the 1930’s) | Blues Version
Recorded live at The Crenshaw Lounge, Los Angeles – April 1935
The rent’s late, the lights flicker, and the gin tastes like ambition — but Nipsey Hussle is already thinking bigger.
His latest record, “Racks In The Middle (1930’s Blues Version),” ain’t about stacks of cash; it’s about staying solid when the blues start countin’ your pockets.
The band’s got that long-distance swing: a weary bass walking steady like it’s been saving nickels since the crash, a trumpet moaning like the wind down Crenshaw, and a piano that sounds like it’s heard every dream get pawned and reclaimed.
Then Nip steps to the mic — hat low, heart high — and growls:
“I started this Marathon with a dollar and a plan,
But the finish line don’t scare no honest man.”
It’s the blues for hustlers — men with dusty shoes, rolled sleeves, and a spark in their eyes that the Great Depression couldn’t stomp out. You can hear the grind in every note, the gospel of motion. No shortcuts, no gimmicks — just the steady rhythm of a man runnin’ laps in a world built to trip him.
The Los Angeles Sentinel called it “the first blues record that sounds like motivation.”
Another critic wrote, “If Muddy Waters sold hope instead of heartbreak, he’d sound like this.”
By the final verse, Nip raises his glass of bootleg brandy and toasts the crowd:
“The Marathon don’t end, baby — it just changes streets.”

When the hustle met the blues — and both refused to quit.
