When I left the unnatural, bone‑bound gates behind me, I stood before a throne. Crushing in its presence, commanding in every breath of this dying air. Something ancient rose at the foot of the bone throne — yellowed, tattered garments clung to its form, covered in unspeakable symbols. A crown rested upon its head, and grotesque tentacles writhed from its lower body, reaching toward every direction of this world’s decaying sky.

The King in Yellow: he granted me a gift that had long since been destroyed. A mask through which I could shape words. After all the aeons I seem to have lingered here, I am finally given a fundamental ability with which to communicate. Speech. And as guttural chanting drifted into my hearing like shattered glass, I shaped a new face.

“Follow the divine path,” said the towering figure — the King in Yellow. “But be warned …”

Something in his words, something that has lingered since my unwanted arrival in this world, made me suspect mockery and scorn — a ruse. A game. I am passed around like a plaything by beings who began devouring my mind the moment I was forced into this dying shell. Whether through psychic assault or through words, they tempt me in one way or another. And all of this leaves the bitter aftertaste that each of these remnants seeks to determine its fate through me.

Yet I suspect I am not even remotely correct in my assumptions — and the gods are planning something far more terrifying.
