The first airplane flight in Alaska occurred on July 3, 1913, when inventor and aviator James V. Martin and his wife Lily, also a pilot, traveled via railway and steamer to bring their biplane from the Seattle to Fairbanks for a short exhibition flight over the heads of disbelieving crowds. Within a mere 20 years, the airplane had become a proven source of transportation across the state. In these scenes, filmed by Bradford Washburn prior to his 1933 climb of Mt. Crillon in the Saint Elias Mountain Range, climbers load gear onto a Lockheed Vega floatplane in southeast Alaska. The passengers marvel at aerial views enroute prior to offloading and beginning their trekking adventure (B&W/Silent/35mm film).
This film sequence is an excerpt of AAF-9329 from the Bradford Washburn collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks.
