At last I have found a terminal program that works nicely for me.
Here is a simple guide as to how to install it and set it up on Linux with a KISS TCP interface to a virtual TNC like Direwolf.
If direwolf is running on your desktop machine then the IP address you would connect to would be
127.0.0.1

sudo apt install -y python3 python3-tk python3-pip python3.10-venv git
git clone https://github.com/DerHirschi/AX25_PO...
cd AX25_POPT
python3 -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
nano PoPT.ini
[Station]
Callsign=YOURCALL
SSID=1
TXDelay=300
FullDuplex=0
python3 PoPT.py
