The original 1922 Nosferatu was an unauthorized adaptation (see below) of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok (Count Dracula), a vampire who becomes infatuated with the wife of the estate agent who is given the task of purchasing a property for him. In the town of Wisburg, Thomas Hutter, a recently married realtor reluctantly leaves his new wife Ellen to visit Count Orlok's castle in the Carpathian mountains. After his arrival, the Shadow of Death begins to haunt Ellen's dreams while Hutter begins to suspect that Orlok is actually a vampire. His suspicions are confirmed when he explores the castle the following day and, in a crypt, finds the coffin in which Orlok is sleeping. Hutter scurries back to his room and as he watches from the castle window, he sees Orlok piling coffins onto a stagecoach before climbing into one himself, just as the coach departs.
With difficulty, Hutter manages to escape from the castle, but injures himself whilst doing so. Following a short period of convalescence, he sets off to return to his home in Wisburg. Orlok's coffins meanwhile have been loaded onto a schooner. The ship's crew find only rats inside the coffins but over the coming days, all the sailors die, and the vampire assumes control of the vessel. Shortly after Hutter arrives home, Orlok's unmanned ship mysteriously docks in Wisburg and, unobserved under cover of night, Orlok, carries one of his coffins to the house he has purchased. Several deaths, which local doctors attribute to an unspecified plague caused by the rats from the ship, occur in the wake of Orlok's arrival.
The 2026 Nosferatu soundtrack is a true Symphony of Horror and Death from the album The Death of Classical Music by The Synthesizer (the film is in the public domain but the music is subject to copyright) and features versions of:
Handel - The Dead March,
Schubert - Death and the Maiden,
Liszt - Csárdás Macabre,
Brahms - A German Requiem, For All Flesh, it is as Grass,
Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique, March To The Scaffold,
Rachmaninoff - Isle of the Dead, and
Chopin - Funeral March.
*NOTE There was an earlier (1915) Russian vampire film called The Afterlife Wanderer directed by Viacheslav Turzhanskii and starring Olga Baclanova (Olga's most famous Hollywood role was as Cleopatra in Tod Browning’s 1932 film Freaks). Unfortunately The Afterlife Wanderer has long been lost and consequently Nosferatu is the earliest remaining vampire film.
Fortunately for us, despite Bram Stoker's widow winning a plagiarism court case and a German judge ordering every copy of Nosferatu seized and destroyed, prints of the film were already circulating in the USA so, despite Florence Stoker's determination to drive a stake through the heart of the film and the wide destruction of the film in Europe following the court case, Nosferatu remains undead.
Robert Eggers Nosferatu remake follows the exact same story as the 1922 original so make sure you WATCH TO THE END TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS!
