MEMORIES OF TOMORROW – KEITH VALLER
London is a city in constant motion. Chaotic, erratic, noisy and distracting. I love London, and as a photographer I get time to pause, observe and quieten myself in concentrated observation. When my time for action comes I have to be ready to move swiftly.
I revisit familiar locations around London, feeling very much at home. This way I can predict, to some extent, where the action will be, where the light will be and where I need to stand in order to catch the image.
Music plays a big part in what I do and sometimes affects how I shoot. I have no need for devices and headphones, I'm able to play complex pieces of music in my head, and it's loud. I have eclectic taste and on a single walk I'll play Keith Jarrett, Talk Talk, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, Radiohead, John Martyn, Sakamoto, John Scofield.... the batteries don't run out.

ABOUT ME
I'm a freelance photographer and graphic designer working in the UK. I've worked extensively in London, Cambridge and Devon. My photographic work spans commissions, portraiture, events, marketing, and personal projects.
My love of art, design and photography has had a great influence on my approach to photography. Starting with the great galleries in London, I was drawn to Caravaggio, particularly his Tenebrism work (Caravaggio is the father of Tenebrism) which blew my mind as a young lad. There was such great power and impact in those paintings and I often find myself using that technique in my street photography through careful use of metering. Chiaroscuro is also present in much of my work.
MY PHILOSOPHY: Work hard. Walk far. Shoot, Shoot and Shoot again.
I never leave home without certain inspirational figures in my mind that I can draw on as a spark to ignite my own creativity. In particular:
Saul Leiter
Ernst Hass
Caravaggio
Rembrandt
Helen Levitt
Alex Webb
Diane Arbus
Robert Doisneau
Arthur Meyerson
William Kline
Elliot Erwitt
Eric Meola
William Eugene Smith
Raghubir Singh
Kirsten Klein
Henri Cartier-Bresson
Hiroshi Sogimoto
Fan Ho
Martine Franck
Vincent van Gogh
Martin Parr
Harry Gruyaert
Arnold Newman
Rodney Smith
"Behind every good photo is a cup of coffee." - Keith Valler
I love finding photographers that I haven't heard about, or great photo documentaries, so feel free to mention them to me in the comments. I really appreciate a good introduction.
