The 1950s were the Golden Age for American automobiles, with roads filled with gigantic cars adorned with chrome and charming tailfins. But amidst this trend, one car stood apart. Born from a transatlantic collaboration and representing a last-ditch effort by a struggling automotive giant, this was the Hudson Italia—a classic sports car rarer than gold and often mistaken as a sibling to the iconic Hudson Hornet.

In 1953, the Hudson Motor Car Company was in deep financial trouble. Sales were plummeting, and the market was dominated by the "Big Three": GM, Ford, and Chrysler. However, Frank Spring, Hudson's Chief Designer, refused to give up. He wanted to create a flagship car that would draw the world's attention back to Hudson.

With limited funds, Spring couldn't design a new car from scratch. He chose the platform of Hudson's compact car, the Hudson Jet, as the backbone and decided to ship the structure across the Atlantic to Milan, Italy. There, the legendary coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring was tasked with creating a new body.

The result was something the world had never seen before: hand-formed aluminum panels wrapped around a lightweight tubular steel framework. This gave the car its distinctive lightweight and flowing lines. The Hudson Italia didn't look like a typical American car. It featured no heavy chrome bumpers but instead had a sleek, V-shaped front bumper. Its most distinctive features included the air scoops above the headlights, designed to cool the brakes, and the triple-stacked, simulated exhaust pipes that housed the taillights, giving it a design so futuristic it resembled a spacecraft.
At the heart of the Italia was the 3.3-liter (202 cu in) inline six-cylinder engine from the Hudson Jet, producing 114 horsepower. It wasn't the fastest car, but it was a smooth and nimble Grand Tourer.
