Fruit Machine Simulator was originally released on 1st January 1984 as part of Codemasters early push into the budget software market, and it quickly became known as one of the first attempts to create a fully featured fruit‑machine experience on 8‑bit home computers. The Acorn Electron version, professionally issued on cassette, was adapted from the BBC Micro release but retained most of the core mechanics that made the title stand out at the time. Designed to emulate the behaviour of real pub fruit machines, it included features such as a Cash Box, Nudge Box (with Compu‑Nudge and Nudge Bank), Skill Climb, Winning Streak, Cash Gamble, Holds, Mega‑Holds, and a Party Time Meter—an unusually rich set of mechanics for a £1.99 budget title. The game began the player with a single pound and challenged them to build winnings by lighting the “CASHBASH” letters through fruit combinations, nudges, and skill‑based events. Although some features were trimmed for the Electron due to hardware limitations, the game still offered a surprisingly faithful simulation, complete with detailed reel layouts and a broad range of win values.
Behind the scenes, the Electron version was produced by a small but clearly defined team. Alan Pennington handled both coding and sound effects, while Gwen Hodson created the graphics. The project was overseen by Tim Miller as director, with Stew Regan credited for production. The cover artwork was produced by Yvonne Priest, and additional illustration work came from Nigel Fletcher, giving the release the distinctive Codemasters visual identity of the mid‑1980s. The game was compatible with the BBC Model B, BBC Model B+, BBC Master 128, and of course the Acorn Electron, and it circulated widely through Codemasters’ budget distribution channels. Today, the Electron version is remembered as a charming and surprisingly feature‑rich entry in the Codemasters catalogue—an early example of how much gameplay could be squeezed into a low‑cost cassette release, even on the Electron’s more restrictive hardware.
Watch me load the game in real time and chuck £2 in and in traditional fruit machine style walk away out of pocket!
