Описание: The start in Interlagos was explosive. Carlos Pace launched off the grid so quickly it looked almost jump-like, storming into the lead. Yet, it was actually his former teammate Carlos Reutemann who slipped into the first corner ahead. The Argentine’s advantage didn’t last, as Pace reclaimed the top spot through the banked third turn and stretched a gap by the end of the opening lap. Behind them, Hunt, Mass, Andretti and Regazzoni gave chase, while mechanical gremlins immediately struck others, with Larry Perkins’ BRM bowing out as usual.

In the early laps, Pace held firm at the front, but Hunt muscled past Reutemann and began stalking the Brabham. The McLaren was faster in the corners, yet powerless down the straights against the Alfa Romeo’s grunt. The duel ended in disaster: under pressure, Pace drifted wide into turn three, struck a patch of broken surface and speared back across the track. Hunt miraculously avoided damage, but Pace’s Brabham shed its nose and radiator, effectively destroying his race.

Hunt inherited the lead, only for the race to descend into bedlam behind. Jochen Mass suddenly lost control under braking, his McLaren smashing into the catch fencing. The barrier itself became a projectile, collected moments later by Clay Regazzoni’s Ensign. Then came utter mayhem: Patrick Depailler spun while dodging the wreckage, Ronnie Peterson had nowhere to go and flew off the track, while others threaded through the chaos by inches. Both Lauda and Watson skimmed past the carnage, the crumbling tarmac at turn three likened by Lauda to “black ice.”

Despite the danger, the race pressed on. Reutemann fended off Andretti until the Lotus faltered with electrical failure, leaving the Ferrari clear. Hunt, battling severe front-tyre wear, pitted and dropped back, freeing Reutemann to seize control. The Argentine cruised into a commanding lead as chaos still unfolded behind him. Depailler, Laffite, Watson, Brambilla and even Pace again would all add their machines to the scrapyard at turn three, while Pryce’s Shadow expired just as Hunt closed in.

In the end, Reutemann emerged as the calm within the storm, scoring his first Ferrari victory ten seconds clear of Hunt. Lauda salvaged third, Fittipaldi brought his car home fourth, Nilsson climbed back to fifth, and Zorzi snatched sixth. Out of a field ravaged by accidents and mechanical attrition, only a handful survived the “race of chaos,” with Reutemann standing tallest amid the wreckage.
