Welcome to Fernwood, a parish of Newark and Sherwood which used to be part of Balderton, but has since split from it’s much larger neighbour

It’s based around a building which once formed part of a mental hospital, known to the locals as Balderton Asylum. When the hospital closed, the vast majority of it was demolished

In its place houses and flats appeared. Lots of them. Fernwood is overwhelmingly residential, and it’s getting bigger. As it does, it’s becoming much more self sufficient with lots of its own amenities

There are some notable landmarks though within the housing, one of which is a tall, eerie looking abandoned structure which was once part of the hospital

Fernwood also has some RAF history as well. This was the location of RAF Balderton, the airbase where Sir Frank Whittle tested the jet engine during the 1940s

The majority of the airfield is now either agricultural fields or a gypsum quarry, but there are clues around Fernwood as to its RAF past - if you know where to go

In short Fernwood is a former piece of Balderton that’s literally built on modern history. There’s way more than meets the eye in this, one of Newark’s newest villages
