Why was the recent Nepal flood so destructive?
This was not simply a normal rainfall-driven flood. A glacier collapse triggered an avalanche of ice, rocks and debris that entered the river system and transformed into a highly destructive debris flow.
From an engineering perspective, this is what makes debris flows so dangerous: unlike a conventional flood, the flow can carry huge quantities of mud, boulders, ice and rock, creating enormous destructive forces as it moves through steep Himalayan valleys.
The basic sequence:
Glacier Collapse → Ice & Rock Avalanche → Debris Flow → Flash Flood
But there is another engineering hazard to understand: when debris blocks a river, it can create a natural dam, potentially leading to a sudden downstream flood.
