This lecture was delivered as part of the Academic Conference on “Thinking in the Margin: History and Relevance of Marginalia (Taʿliqāt) in Islamic Tradition”, held on 28 December 2025.
In this session, Hasan Wafy Mannarkkad explores the theme “Intellectual Renewal from the Periphery: How Islamic Thought Regenerates Itself through Taʿliqāt.” The talk examines how marginal notes, glosses, and scholarly annotations—often produced outside the intellectual “center”—have historically functioned as powerful sites of critique, renewal, and continuity within the Islamic intellectual tradition.
By focusing on taʿliqāt as a living epistemic practice, the lecture highlights how Islamic thought evolves not only through canonical texts but also through dialogical engagement at the margins.
