On O2 Classroom we've spoken quite a bit about the Active Cycle Breathing Technique. We put together this video to help you learn properly how to do the technique. It can be very effective in clearing mucus and relaxing airways.
Pursed lip breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, and huff breathing are often suggested for those suffering from a chronic lung condition, such as COPD, IPF, or CF. They are all beneficial for maintaining lung elasticity and alleviating symptoms such as breathlessness or coughing. However, when done in an orchestrated succession these exercises can be extremely effective at relaxing airways and clearing mucus.
This video goes over in detailed instructions how to perform each of these exercises. You might consider trying this technique when you first get up in the morning. Mucus often settles in your chest overnight and this technique can help clear it out and open your airways, giving you a better start to the day. Clearing your airways a few minutes before eating can also make mealtimes easier. When taking inhaled medication doing the Active Cycle Breathing technique before hand can help open airways, allowing medication to more deeply penetrate the lungs and be more effective.
