The romantic story of the origin of widow's walks is often told about whaler's wives using these rooftop platforms as a lookout to watch for their husbands' return, hoping that they would not become widows. But the real story is that they are called roofwalks and were primarily used for fire prevention as a platform to quickly deal with chimney fires.
On Nantucket, the building of roofwalks became prevalent during the height of the whaling era in the 18th and 19th centuries on the homes of ship owners and sea captains. There’s little evidence that they were used to observe shipping in the harbor, but they certainly offered a good view of that activity. Beyond practical reasons, they were often viewed as a symbol of status and wealth.
