Merry Christmas!
This adventure started when my friend Lee Hendricks showed up at a brunch gig randomly in December 2024 and dropped off this old case containing this tenor banjo. It was a gift after I played guitar on his record, and it changed the course of my whole year. I bought a Bach Six Suites book and began chipping away at it in the beginning of 2025. My inspirations beyond my pure interest and want to learn to read music include Pablo Casals, who is basically the reason this piece is performed today, and Scottish musician Rob MacKillop, who has a wonderful YouTube channel of him reading and interpretting all kinds of music on all kinds of instruments.
You never know the impact one thoughtful act of kindness will have. This banjo humbled and inspired me. If there's something you want to learn or something you want to do, jump in head first! A year later you'll turn around and be thankful you did.
This recording is dedicated to my love, Josee, for being my side all year, while I was unearthing this note by note, often while she was sleeping.
