Built in the 1880s by coal tycoon Robert Dunsmuir with a fortune built on deadly mining practices, Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria, B.C., is considered Canada's most haunted mansion. Dunsmuir died before ever living in his $45-million (today's value) monument.
His widow, Joan, inherited the castle and watched the family fortune and unity disintegrate amid legal battles and mismanagement, dying there amidst early reports of ghosts. The castle's tragic history deepened when it served as a WWI military hospital, where dozens of soldiers died, adding a new layer of suffering.
After periods as a college and offices, it is now a museum, where countless visitors, staff, and investigators report consistent paranormal activity: apparitions of a "Woman in White" (likely Joan), soldiers, children, phantom footsteps, and the famous "walking trousers." The rapid, complete ruin of the Dunsmuir dynasty within two generations is seen as a "curse."
The castle stands not just as a haunted tourist site, but as a permanent, unsettling record of how the consequences of greed, exploitation, and trauma can leave an indelible mark on a place, manifesting as phenomena that defy easy explanation.
