Hello! My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Deccani language.
JUNUBI DIALECT
Deccani is a distinct variety of Urdu spoken in the Deccan region of south-central India. It reflects regional variation shaped by contact with local languages and the preservation of older forms of Urdu. Broadly, it comprises two main dialects: shumaali (“northern”), found in and around the former Kingdom of Hyderabad—including North Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and southern Madhya Pradesh—and junoobi (“southern”), spoken across southern Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. The differences between the two reflect the North’s continued interaction with North Indian Urdu and the South interacting more with Dravidian languages. Notably, some of the earliest Urdu literary works originated in the Deccan.
As a predominantly Muslim ethnic group, Islam is central to Deccani culture and identity. Centuries of Persianate rule have deeply influenced Deccani traditions, visible in their rich, meat-based cuisine—featuring dishes like biryani, haleem, and paaya—and in traditional attire such as sherwanis and khada dupattas. At the same time, Deccani culture is rooted in its local surroundings. The Deccani accent shows strong influences from Marathi and Dravidian languages; local ingredients like tamarind leaves, sorghum, and millet are staples in their cuisine; and everyday clothing often includes sarees and kurta pajamas.
Also on festivals, there are some Deccani specific festivals like Mirag (most secular), Hazrat Khwaja Banda Nawaz Urs (Sufi), Maula Ali Urs (Shia/Sufi), Nauroz, Basant, etc. but a lot of these have either died out or are condemned.
