Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou in Beijing on April 10, 2024. It was the first meeting between the two men since their landmark meeting in Singapore nine years ago. It also marked the first time a serving or former leader of the self-ruled island has met the top leadership in the mainland. In opening remarks before heading into the closed-door meeting, both Xi and Ma sought to strike a conciliatory tone amid soaring cross-strait tensions.
