Massive columns of tiny pieces of plastic and manmade debris are caught up in the Pacific Ocean's massive gyre, which is like "a massive, slow-moving whirlpool," says Amy Uhrin a chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Hundreds of marine species are ingesting the debris. Uhrin explains what it would take to clean up the tons of garbage, and how countries' mismanaged waste systems are a major cause of the problem.
