If you’re new here, my name is Téa Bishop. I’m a six rotation outside hitter for San Francisco State University, currently the #2 Division 2 school in the country. I successfully navigated the recruiting process as an unranked, never-on-the-jva-watchlist, average recruit.

How I got here…

8 years old: Picked up a volleyball for the first time. Had no idea this sport would take over my life!

5th grade: Played my first year of club volleyball on my local 11’s team. Didn’t know what I was doing, but I loved it.

High school: Realized I wanted to play in college… but had zero clue how to actually get recruited.

Sophomore year: Recruiting stress hit hard. I had no idea where to start, was terrified I wasn’t good enough, and felt completely overwhelmed trying to sort through my own film.

Junior year: Started getting coaches on my court at club tourneys, and went on my first official visits!

Senior year: Got multiple offers and committed to UC Merced, a conference-winning NAIA school (that’s now D2)!

Undergrad: Played at Merced and had a blast. Loved the school and the people, hated the small town.

Grad School: Transferred to SF State, won the Western Region and lost in the National Championships 15-13 in the 5th set.

Now: I play for a program that fits me perfectly, and I have the best coach I’ve ever had. I look forward to practice every day because my team pushes me to be my best, and thanks to our strength coach (who used to train UC Berkeley football players), I’m in the best shape of my life. And the best part? I have time. Time for everything else I love—going to the beach, exploring San Francisco with my friends, and spending time with my family and cats.

Looking back on my recruiting, I wasn’t missing talent. I wasn’t missing work ethic.

I was just missing a strategy.

If you’re stuck in your recruiting process, I get it. I’ve been there. But once I figured out what actually worked? Everything fell into place.

So if you’re in the trenches of college recruiting, stay the course. I felt hopeless for a long time, but I never gave up. My work ethic got me to where I am today.

Control the controllables. Keep going. Let your dreams be bigger than your challenges.
