Who carried out the chemical weapons attack in Syria in April 2018? How did an Israeli sniper kill a medic in Gaza in June? Who were the Saudi hit team that carried out the brutal murder of Jamal Khashoggi? And how close were they to the Saudi Crown Prince? Did the Nigerian military really act in self-defense when they fired machine guns into a crowd of hundreds, killing dozens of unarmed marchers? The Visual Investigations team at the New York Times uses innovative techniques to collect, analyze and present documentary visual evidence that clears away the fog of complex news events. These talks will demonstrate how those innovative analyses have worked in marquee investigations, and address some of the challenges and limitations of conducting those investigations.
