Write the Vision: Making it Plain in a World of Chaos
Scripture: Habakkuk 2:2
Introduction: The Cry in the Dark
The book of Habakkuk doesn't start with a song of praise; it starts with a scream of "How long?" Habakkuk was a prophet living in a time of extreme injustice, violence, and social collapse. He looked around and saw nothing but chaos, and he asked God why He was silent.
Many of us feel like Habakkuk today. We look at our bank accounts, our broken families, or the headlines of the world, and we wonder if God has a plan at all. In chapter 2, Habakkuk decides to take his stand on the "watchtower." He says, "I will stand my watch... to see what He will say to me."
And in verse 2, the Lord finally answers. His answer is the blueprint for how we survive the "wait" and move into our purpose.
1. The Command to Document: "Write the Vision"
"Then the Lord answered me and said: 'Write the vision...'"
God tells Habakkuk to get a tablet and a pen. Why? Because revelation that isn't recorded is often forgotten. When we are in the middle of a trial, our emotions are loud. Fear tells us the story is over; anxiety tells us God has left. But when God gives you a promise, a dream, or a word of hope, you must "write it down." Writing the vision is an act of faith. It says, "I believe this is so certain to happen that I am putting it in the permanent record."
Application: What has God spoken to your heart that you’ve allowed to fade? It’s time to stop just "thinking" about your future and start documenting what God is calling you to do.
2. The Clarity of Purpose: "And Make it Plain"
"...And make it plain on tablets..."
God doesn't want His people confused. A vision that is too "cloudy" cannot be followed. "Making it plain" means stripping away the excuses and the "what-ifs" and getting down to the core of what God requires.
If the vision is to heal your marriage, make it plain: “I will seek counseling and speak words of life.” If the vision is to start a ministry, make it plain: “I will serve where I am until the door opens.” Clarity produces consistency. If it's plain, you don't have to second-guess your steps when the storm gets dark.
3. The Call to Action: "That He May Run"
"...That he may run who reads it."
This is the most powerful part of the verse. The vision isn't just for you to look at and feel good; it's designed to give you momentum. Habakkuk 2:2 suggests that the vision acts like a relay baton. When you see clearly what God has promised, you no longer crawl in despair—you run with purpose. The "runner" is anyone who catches the heart of what God is doing.
A clear vision turns a spectator into a participant. * It turns a victim into a victor.
When the vision is plain, you can run even when you're tired, because you know exactly where the finish line is.
Conclusion: The Appointed Time
If you read the very next verse (verse 3), God gives a caveat: "For the vision is yet for an appointed time." Just because you wrote it doesn't mean it happens tomorrow. But because you wrote it, you can wait for it. Today, God is asking you: Will you trust the vision I gave you more than the chaos you see?
Pick up your pen. Take your stand on the watchtower. Write the vision. Make it plain. And get ready to run.
