Although sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of Jamaican dance music, the term Reggae more properly denotes a particular musical style that developed in the late 1960s from ska and other local variations on calypso and rhythm and blues, and became widely known in the 1970s through the works of Bob Marley; the genre's lyrics are heavily influenced by Rastafarian ideas.
