In May 1982, a thousand Argentine soldiers sat in their trenches at Goose Green, completely convinced the British would never actually attack. Their officers told them diplomacy would end it. The math said an assault was suicide. Even the BBC announced the British were coming and they still didn't believe it. Hours later, 600 paratroopers from 2 PARA launched a brutal night assault that would change the entire Falklands War. This is the story of what happened when an outnumbered battalion attacked a fortified garrison across open ground and what the Argentine conscripts said when they realized no one was coming to negotiate.
Lt. Col. H. Jones led from the front and paid with his life. Major Chris Keeble took command and pulled off one of the boldest bluffs in modern military history. And nearly a thousand young Argentine soldiers many of them teenagers surrendered with the same words on their lips: "We thought they would negotiate."
This is the Battle of Goose Green. The fight nobody believed would happen.
