The Peach Blossom Spring is a masterpiece of blue-and-green landscape painting by Qiu Ying (style name Shifu, hao Shizhou), one of the “Four Masters of the Wu School” in the Ming Dynasty. It is an ink and color handscroll on paper, measuring 33 cm in height and 472 cm in width, currently housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Based on Tao Yuanming’s The Peach Blossom Spring (Jin Dynasty), the scroll unfolds the narrative of a fisherman’s accidental discovery of a secluded utopia, depicting scenes of entry, life within, and departure. Executed in the grand blue-and-green landscape style with layered mineral pigments (azurite and malachite), it features vivid yet solemn colors. The composition follows the fisherman’s journey, creating deep spatial layers; figures, pavilions, and landscapes are rendered with meticulous precision, blending the formal rigor of court painting with the lyrical spirit of literati art—an iconic work of Ming Dynasty landscape painting.
