Continuity of care in bereavement support is crucial to helping families navigate their loss. Providing a seamless handover to bereavement services will ensure that parents feel supported throughout the process.
It’s important to address any concerns they may have. Not all communities are familiar with the term ‘bereavement support’, and it may carry different connotations depending on their cultural background. For some, the language can be confusing or even concerning.
Acknowledge that the idea of bereavement support might be new or unclear, and explain to them that these services are there to offer emotional, spiritual and practical support. It’s not about diagnosing or treating mental health conditions but rather about offering compassionate guidance and a safe space to process their grief.
In some communities, there is a stigma attached to seeking help, particularly if it's perceived to be related to mental health. This can make families hesitant to reach out. We can alleviate these concerns by clearly distinguishing bereavement support from mental health services. This can break down the barrier of accessing help, and ensure that every family feels safe and respected in their unique journey through grief. Red Nose Australia has been supporting grieving families through the loss of a pregnancy, stillbirth, death of a baby or child for almost fifty years. This video has been made in consultation with community members who have experienced a loss. If you need immediate support, please call 1300 308 307.
