Most people assume the title track 1999 would be the best song on Prince’s classic 1982 album 1999 — but on my list it isn’t #1.
In 1982, albums like Thriller and 1999 defined an era of music that people are still listening to more than 40 years later.
In this video, I rank my Top 5 favorite songs from the album and explain why a deeper funk track takes the top spot.
Some fans might expect hits like Little Red Corvette to appear, but I decided to focus on the songs that really show Prince’s funk genius and the deeper cuts that helped define the Minneapolis sound.
My countdown includes:
#5 – International Lover – a smooth cult favorite
#4 – Automatic – hypnotic, experimental funk
#3 – Lady Cab Driver – funky, humorous, and bold
#2 – 1999 – the legendary hit we all know
#1 – D.M.S.R. – pure Minneapolis funk party energy
I also talk about how some of these songs almost sound like tracks Prince could have given to Morris Day and The Time, but he kept them for himself, showing his incredible creativity during this era.
While Prince was making 1999, he was also writing and producing albums for The Time (What Time Is It?) and Vanity 6 (Vanity 6), proving just how prolific and genius he really was during the early 1980s.
