Today's presentation is an abstract from Tagore's popular dance drama "Chandalika” which was written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1938. Chandalika is a story of a girl named Prakriti from the untouchable caste. Her life as a women and then as an untouchable women is full of rejections and ridicule. She questions her existence when one day a Budhist monk begs for water, she hesitates as a low caste girl to give water to a spiritual “high” class monk. A story that fights social discrimination, women´s identity and questions aspects of the universal concept of love.
Prakriti is so mesmerized and so engulfed in her desire for Ananda that she forces her mother to use black magic to pull him back to her. In this tussle between love that binds and love that helps let go, Prakriti learns the true meaning of the word. The story is about different shades of love... Love and infatuation, love that is powerplay. The love of the mother towards her child who nearly kills herself in getting what her daughter wants.
