The JobTrainer package comes from a government that has a very poor record with employment, says Deputy Labor Leader Richard Marles.
The federal government announced its $2 billion JobTrainer scheme on Thursday - with the states to provide up to $500 million - to support out-of-work Australians during the pandemic period.
The program is designed to retrain an extra 340,000 laid-off workers and school leavers through short-course training programs and will subsidise the wages of a further 100,000 apprentices.
“You’d forgive us for being a little skeptical about the government’s bona fides here,” Mr Marles told Sky News.
“It’s a government that has cut $3 billion out of this sector since its come to office, where we have 140,000 less apprentices and trainees.
"We are talking about a government who in exactly this space over the last seven years has brought on an enormous amount of damage.
“So the kind of skills going forward is going to need a very different approach to the one that has been demonstrated by this government since 2013.”
