Dr. Uma Kumar, a senior doctor at AIIMS New Delhi, recently issued a warning about the dangers of using ChatGPT and similar AI tools for medical use.


Her warning followed a real case in which a patient experienced serious body problems. The patient had been suffering from back pain and, instead of consulting a doctor, relied on ChatGPT for advice. Based on the information he received, he started taking painkillers on his own.These medicines, especially when taken improperly or for long periods, can cause severe side effects.


Dr. Kumar stressed that AI tools do not have access to a person’s full medical history, test results, allergies, or underlying conditions. While AI responses may sound confident and convincing, they can still be medically unsafe or inappropriate for an individual case. Doctors, she explained, make decisions only after physical examination, investigations, and clinical judgment — something AI cannot replace.


She advised that AI platforms should only be used for general awareness, not for diagnosing. Consulting a qualified medical professional remains essential.
