Plymouth was founded in 1928 by Chrysler as a low-priced brand to compete with Ford and Chevrolet during the Great Depression.

It quickly became one of America’s best-selling marques in the 1930s and 1940s, known for solid engineering and value. After World War II, Plymouth helped define the muscle car era with icons like the Barracuda, Road Runner, and ’Cuda in the 1960s and early 1970s. However, rising competition, fuel crises, and brand overlap within Chrysler weakened its identity.

Despite hits like the Voyager minivan in the 1980s, Plymouth steadily declined and was officially discontinued in 2001, ending a 73-year chapter in American automotive history.
