കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിൽ അഷ്ടമുടിക്കായലിനും കല്ലടയാറിനും ഇടയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ദ്വീപസമൂഹമാണ് മൺറോ തുരുത്ത് (ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്:Monroe Island).[1][2] കൊല്ലം താലൂക്കിൽചിറ്റുമല ബ്ലോക്കുപഞ്ചായത്തു പരിധിയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്ത്‌ കൂടിയാണിത്. ഈ പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ ആകെ വിസ്തീർണം 13.37 ച.കി.മീ. ആണ്. ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നതിനു് റോഡ്, റെയിൽ, ജലഗതാഗത സൌകര്യങ്ങൾ ലഭ്യമാണ്. കൊല്ലം പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്നും റോഡുവഴി ഏകദേശം 25 കി.മീ. ദൂരമുണ്ട്. മൺറോതുരുത്ത് ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്തിലെ ആകെ ജനസംഖ്യ 2011ലെ സെൻസസ് പ്രകാരം 4636 പുരുഷന്മാരും 4963 സ്ത്രീകളും അടക്കം ആകെ 9599 ആണ്. തെങ്ങും നെല്ലും മത്സ്യവുമാണ് പ്രധാന കൃഷി. തെങ്ങു കൃഷിക്കനുയോജ്യമായ മണ്ണാണ് ഇവിടെയുള്ളത്. കൃഷി, മത്സ്യബന്ധനം, കയറുപിരി, വിനോദസഞ്ചാരം എന്നിവയാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രധാന തൊഴിൽ. തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദിവാനായിരുന്ന കേണൽ മൺറോയുടെ സ്മരണാർഥമാണ് ദ്വീപിന് ഈ പേര് ലഭിച്ചത്. കോട്ടയത്തെചർച്ച് സൊസൈറ്റിക്ക് മതപ്രചാരണത്തിനും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ പ്രചരണത്തിനുമായി വിട്ടുകൊടുത്തിരുന്ന ഈ പ്രദേശം പിന്നീട് റാണി സേതുലക്ഷ്മീഭായി സർക്കാരിലേക്ക് ഏറ്റെടുത്തു (1930).

The short ferry journey from ferry point to Munroe Island was a retreat to the eyes. We reached Munroe Islands where our canoe was waiting for us. Canoes are easily available here either by DTPC or by private operators.

The drive through the small village quickly gave a glimpse of colonial settlement there. The place was clean, scarcely populated with beautiful houses and roads surrounded by beautiful landscapes and canals.

Munroe Islands or Mundrothuruthu is a cluster of eight tiny islands, located at the junction of two water bodies, Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, in Kollam district, Kerala. Though the name sounds quite unique for a destination to be in India, the credit goes to Colonel John Munro of the former Princely State of Travancore who integrated several backwater regions by digging canals.

How to Go

To reach Munroe Islands, one has to reach Kollam first. Trains and buses are easily available till Kollam. The nearest airports are Kochi and Trivandrum to reach Kollam. The distance of islands from Kollam is 25 Km. You have to board a ferry from Perumon ferry point, Kollam to reach Munroe Islands.
