How to Use Lightroom's Graduated Filter Tool -- The Grad Filter, as it's often called, in an invaluable tool for making exposure adjustments in selected areas and bringing out the drama in skies without affecting the entire image. The graduated filter is just that, it applies the strongest effect -- 100% at the beginning and gradually reduces the intensity of the effect to zero at the end.
You can use the keyboard shortcut "M" to select the graduated filter tool, which located in the Toolbar in the Develop Module on the right, under the Histogram. You can adjust the sliders before you apply the filter or after and edit them any time by clicking on the pin with the black circle to select it and then change the slider values.
To make sure your gradient is straight, hold down the shift key as you drag your mouse. Start where you want the effect the most intense and drag down or up. So if you want to intensify the sky, start dragging from the top of the image down toward the horizon where the sky meets the land or the water. You can adjust the size, intensity, position, and angle.
You can apply a single graduated filter or multiple ones for different effects. You can also use the brush feature to paint over areas to take away the effect, such as when you have mountains against a sky that you want to darken without making the mountains dark.
The most common use for the grad filter is to adjust exposure in the sky but you can also use the other sliders and add contrast, change the white balance, adjust the saturation and clarity, and correct noise.
