0:19 Introduction & Explanation
2:08 Start of tutorial
Text Instructions:
1. In Pro Tools, create 1 stereo instrument track and 15 stereo aux tracks.
2. Open instance of Maschine in instrument 1 insert A.
3. Label new tracks Pad 1-16 starting with Instrument 1 ending with Aux 15.
4. Create a new Maschine project if a blank one isn't preloaded; Name it Pro Tools Template.
5. On Maschine software in the scene arranger, create 10 individual patterns with a length of 4 bars starting with scene 1 ending with scene 10. These will contain any Maschine midi data on a timeline linked to pro tools. (Depending on your typical song length, you may want to use more or less patterns when creating this template. The more patterns the better because you can bounce sections in pro tools sessions by highlighting the PT timeline.)
6. Always remember in order to have Maschine's timeline linked to Pro Tools you must have all scenes selected (Double clicking under scene names selects all patterns and to navigate through separate patterns click directly on the desired Scene name.)
7. In Maschine software, click on each individual sound or unloaded pad and under the out tab, switch the main out starting with Pad 1 routed to Ext 1 and ending with Pad 16 routed to Ext 16.
8. In Pro Tools highlight the 16 tracks you created earlier, starting with pad 1 ending with pad 16. Command + Option + Shift Click the input on Pad 1 and under plugin find Maschine insert A and click Maschine Out 1. This will route Maschine's sounds to the monitoring inputs in the correct order.
9. To use multiple groups in Maschine in your DAW, each group requires a new instance of Maschine to give you the stereo outs required for individual routing. To create a new group in Pro Tools and Maschine repeats steps 1-8 with appropriate naming. To switch between instances of Maschine in Pro Tools shift+click the step button next to control at the top of your controller to bring up the dialogue on the second screen of your Maschine controller. Navigate up and down with buttons 5 & 6 and select instances with button 8
10. To use Premade Maschine kits with this setup. Starting after step 8 load them in the same fashion you would in standalone mode. Preview your kits on the instrument channel with Maschine loaded on it and once you have found your desired kit repeat step 7.
11. In order to use another midi control surface in Pro Tools at the same time that Maschine is active create a Stereo Instrument Track. In the Mix window right click on the label that says Inserts A-E and make sure the instrument box is checked. This will bring up the portion of the display that shows which midi surface is controlling what.
12. Pro Tools sessions automatically load previous Maschine data without opening a project file; But to rensure no date loss, Always make sure to save both the Pro Tools session file and the Maschine session File. You can either save the Maschine project file in the Pro Tools session folder or in your default Maschine projects folder, just make sure to name it the same as the Pro Tools session name. Also make sure to save each Maschine group as a separate Maschine Project if you are using multiple groups. The easiest way to label these Maschine sessions would be "Project Name" A, "Project Name" B, etc. Pro Tools will automatically recall these Maschine projects whenever you reload the session as a whole.
13. Always have Maschine record armed when you want to record in notes. You will be recording MIDI into Maschine's sequencer for Maschine and MIDI for other instruments and sound modules into Pro Tools.
14. To give yourself the same type of count in that Maschine standalone has when recording, right click on a blank area near the transport and select Expanded Transport. Make sure pre-roll is selected and change the first 0 to a 1.
This was tested with Pro Tools 10, Maschine 2.0.2, and Maschine MK2 Hardware. Also tested on Pro Tools HD and Maschine 1.8
NOTES:
To sequence Maschine style (scene by scene) highlight sections of the Pro Tools timeline with loop playback active.
To navigate through scenes in Maschine without unlinking timelines click on the desired scene name underneath the Maschine transport in the Maschine plugin.
You can always switch your tracks to mono but stereo is my preference to start with.
Contrary to what is shown in the video you can also route individual outs from the Maschine hardware.
**I say in the video you are limited to one group. This is only true if you use all 16 pads of a group
**You can always come back and switch individual pattern/scene lengths. It's best to label the scenes start points on Pro Tools with corresponding markers.
