Habit/Form:

Good rugged enduring tree, solid medium-sized fellow that can satisfy a large feel if needed but can be slipped into smaller spaces such as car-parks/parking lots. Plan properly because height ranges from 10-30m, although you'll find many in the neighbourhood under or around 20m. Usually tall single trunked but often dividing into a few large size branches, most main branches are ascending with weeping branchlets. The bark is very notable and popular for a variety of uses, very tough/hard wood, deeply fissured black/black-reddish bark, can have reddish colour in the cracks, very rough bark, quite dark.

A vigorous tree that can handle neglect and stress, drought, frost, wind, different soils and soil pH, tends to develop as a small tree in poor soils. Takes full sun, attracts lots of birds. Long lived.

There are a few notable subspecies usually with a main difference of flower colour.


Leaves:

The juvenile leaves are alternate, ovate to lanceolate, 45-100mm x 5-13mm, somewhat glaucous colour. The adult leaves are lanceolate/falcate, 80-140mm x 15-30mm, concolourous, dull dark-green or grey, dull bluish-grey or bluish-green.


Flowers:

Buds can become fairly large with a short-pointed conical bud-cap that is shorter than the bud's calyx-tube, producing flowers mostly from late autumn to spring. Flowers are polystemonous, most notably rosy crimson coloured, but some subspecies produce creamy white or pale pink colours. Was one of the most common red flowering Eucalypts in Sydney.


Fruit:

Usually decent/large size, ovoid/urceolate capsule with recessed valves, about 10mm x 8mm in size.
