Sixty flag-waving Kurdish protesters breached security at the European Parliament and had a sit-down protest inside on Level 3 of the main building on 7 October. UKIP MEP Diane James (who along with 2 other UKIP MEPs) had clothes and personal items stolen worth £3,000 in the European Parliament, Strasbourg in September said: “This is incredibly dangerous. These people could all have been carrying machine guns and we could have been wiped out if they so wished. The security services in the European Parliament should hang their heads in shame. This is a breach too far.”
“In 2009 , 900 security staff were employed in the European Parliament at a cost of €43 million. Since then these security people have been taken on as European Parliament staff.
“This is a prime example of a huge amount of money being paid by the taxpayer for a very poor service. Even the Europhiles must be shocked by this latest event.”
There have been four major security incidents in the Parliament in the past three years.
In February 2009, a man brandishing a pistol stole around €60,000 from a bank inside the building. The perpetrator got away.
In May 2010, a canteen was robbed. Again, no suspect was apprehended.
On 4 February 2011, two men held up the Post Office in the Parliament and stole €8,000. Both men got away.
On 18 February 2011, a TV journalist passed through security with a toy metal gun tucked under his jacket. He revealed the pistol, on camera, while standing only a few metres away from the presidents of the Parliament, the Council and the Commission.
Items of waste or high expenditure are called into question by the report by EPP member Ville Itala to be debated and voted on in next week’s budgetary control committee.
