The Package-1 of the Lahore Orange Line Metro Train Project, Pakistan’s first inter-city rapid mass transit train system, constructed by Habib Construction. The works primarily comprised the construction of civil infrastructure, including substructure and superstructure, stations and their civil works, as well as prefab and finishing works of stations over a 13.6 km long corridor between Dera Gujran and PIA Planetarium. Out of 13.6 km, 11.9 km is elevated while 1.7 km is underground, featuring 11 elevated and 2 underground stations. HCS established the country’s first-ever pre-casting yard equipped with a state-of-the-art pre-tensioning system and other related machinery, casting the first U-tub, testing it, and successfully launching the first 250-ton+ U-tub girder.

This corridor passes through some of the busiest and most densely populated areas of Lahore, which are around 1000 years old. The area of Package-1 was particularly challenging, especially from Garhi Shahu to Jain Mandir. The elevated portion starting from Dera Gujran crosses Lahore Ring Road at Quaid-e-Azam interchange and thereafter runs along G.T. Road through Salamat Pura, Daroghawala, Pakistan Mint, Shalamar Town, Shalimar Gardens, Baghbanpura, Singhpura, Begampura, UET, Sultan Pura, and crosses Co-operative Store near the eastern end of Garhi Shahu Bridge.

It then crosses the existing railway lines near Lahore Railway Station and Allama Iqbal Road along Nicholson Road before crossing Empress Road. Subsequently, it moves along MeLeod Rd., crossing Montgomery Road while passing the Lakshmi Chowk; it crosses Abbott Rd., Nisbat Rd., Cooper Rd., Mission Rd., Hall Road, Napier Rd., Mall Road at GPO, and Lahore High Court before passing along Ustad Allah Bakhsh Road and crossing Maclagan Road, Nabha Road, Jain Mandir before terminating at PIA Planetarium.

The project was substantially completed on April 29, 2019, with the commercial operations starting on October 25, 2020. Today marks the fifth anniversary of the commercial operation of the Lahore Orange Line.
