Should I take my child to the ER if their fever is above 102?

You don't need to take your child to the ER for the vast majority of fevers. There are a few reasons to take your child to the ER. First of all if they are under 3 months old and have a fever of 100.4 or more, they should be seen by a doctor. You should also take your child to the pediatrician if she has had a fever for more than 5 days or if the fever starts after a few days of a cold. If the fever is going over 100.4 and staying over 100.4 for more than five days, you'd want to have them seen but it's not a rush to the emergency room. The main thing to pay attention to is how the child looks. If they appear "out of it" or are crying more, you can try a fever reducing medicine like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen, but it's not going to take the fever down to normal. It may only take the fever down by a few degrees and that's ok. With most viruses, the fever starts with the symptoms. But if the child has a cough or cold for a few days and then develops a fever, you'd want them to be seen by the doctor to rule out a secondary infection such as an ear infection.
