Wood storks primarily use specialized tactile feeding method called “grope feeding” or tact location, walking slowly through shallow wetlands with their bills submerged and partially open.
When prey touches the bill, it snaps shut. They may supplement this with foot-stirring to flush prey and occasional wing flicking.
The bill-snap reflex is one of the fastest know in vertebrates, acting a “trap” or aquatic creatures.
Wood Storks circle lagoon’s perimeter, shallow wetlands, and marshes.
