Back when it last saw a redesign, President Obama had just begun his term and the Black Eyed Peas were dominating the music charts. Fast forward to today, and Toyota has completely overhauled its legendary off-road vehicle, ensuring it remains true to its tough nature while undergoing significant improvements.

The 2025 model is built on the same TNGA-F truck platform as the newly updated Tacoma. It moves away from the old 4.0-liter V-6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission. Instead, it now boasts a more modern turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, capable of delivering 278 horsepower and 378 pound-feet of torque. This setup provides an additional 8 horsepower and a significant 100 more pound-feet of torque than its predecessor.

For those looking for even more power, Toyota offers an I-Force Max hybrid variant of the engine, which pumps out 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Both power options come with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, although a manual transmission option is not available.

The 4Runner's drive system options include two-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive, and full-time four-wheel drive. Two-wheel drive models are equipped with a limited-slip differential, while four-wheel drive models include the same differential plus an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case for high and low-range gearing. Toyota's Active Traction Control (A-Trac) also enhances the vehicle's capability.

A new feature is the Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism, which improves the vehicle's articulation with the simple press of a button, keeping the tires in contact with the ground. The vehicle now sports a 32-degree approach and a 24-degree departure angle, enhancing its off-road prowess.

The 2025 4Runner introduces new drive modes for tackling Mud, Dirt, and Sand, alongside an improved, quieter Crawl Control function. Additionally, a new Trailhunter trim level, inspired by the Tacoma, has been added to the lineup. This version is designed for the most demanding off-road adventures, featuring 33-inch off-road tires, special Old Man Emu shocks, an ARB-designed roof rack, a high air intake, a light bar, and protective steel skid plates.

Aside from the rugged Trailhunter, the 4Runner lineup includes a variety of trims from the SR5 to the luxurious Limited and the top-of-the-line Platinum and TRD Pro models. The Limited trim caters to those who prefer comfort over off-road capabilities, offering premium interior features and black exterior accents.

The 2025 model comes with an 8.0-inch touchscreen as standard, with an optional 14.0-inch screen and a larger digital instrument cluster available on higher trims. Connectivity features include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, and multiple USB ports.

Safety is a priority, with the inclusion of Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 package on all models, featuring automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing, road sign recognition, and high-beam assist.

While Toyota has not yet announced the pricing for the 2025 4Runner, it's expected to be slightly higher than the 2024 model, which starts at $42,100. The new 4Runner is set to hit the market later this year, promising to be an exciting update for fans of this iconic off-roader.
