Описание: Diego de Landa was a Spanish Franciscan priest in the 16th century whose actions significantly impacted the preservation of Maya culture and knowledge by leading to the destruction of Maya codices and hieroglyphs. As a zealous advocate for the Catholic faith, de Landa viewed Maya religious texts, iconography, and hieroglyphs as pagan symbols that conflicted with Christian teachings. In 1562, he initiated a notorious "auto-da-fé" in Maní, Yucatán, during which he and his followers confiscated and burned numerous Maya codices, religious idols, and other artifacts. De Landa claimed to have destroyed many books and icons he considered idolatrous, erasing vast amounts of indigenous knowledge in the process.
