After an unexpected miscarriage, John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Kate (Vera Farmiga), who were expecting a baby, are devastated, with Kate suffering a nervous breakdown and their marriage in jeopardy. In an attempt to save their marriage from collapse, the couple travels to an orphanage in hopes of adopting a child. Here, they meet Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), a little girl who is a bit of a maverick. The little girl exudes a unique quality that attracts Mr. and Mrs. John, and eventually Esther becomes part of their family.
However, with Esther's arrival, various bizarre events ensue. Kate has a vague feeling that there is an unknown side behind this little girl with the face of an angel ......
