Today, we’re busting one of the biggest myths in the planted aquarium hobby — the belief that certain plants are “heavy root feeders.” This idea leads a lot of hobbyists to spend money on nutrient-rich substrates and constant root tab dosing, even when their plants don’t actually need it.
Here’s the truth: all aquatic plants can absorb nutrients directly through their leaves and stems, a process known as foliar feeding. Unlike terrestrial plants, which have a waxy cuticle that blocks nutrient uptake through their leaves, submerged plants don’t form this barrier. Instead, they’re surrounded by nutrient-rich water full of fish waste, organics, and decomposing material — the perfect environment for leaf-based nutrient absorption.
Even industry leaders agree. ADA, a company famous for selling premium aquasoils, states in their own educational posts that aquatic plants are more than capable of foliar feeding. 2hr Aquarist, one of the most trusted sources in planted tank science, also explains that root size or structure doesn’t determine nutrient preferences. In many cases, nutrient uptake depends more on the nutrient type than on the plant species.
And the science backs this up. Research on Cryptocoryne wendtii showed it grew best in plain inert sand with liquid fertilizer dosed every two weeks — outperforming nutrient-rich substrates. Another study on Echinodorus found no special advantage to root feeding unless plants were placed in artificial, chemically modified substrates not suitable for aquariums. One paper even removed the roots entirely from four submerged species, and the plants still met 100% of their nutrient requirements through foliar feeding.
This doesn’t mean aquasoil and root tabs are useless — they definitely have their place. High-end aquascapes with red plants benefit from aquasoil to keep water-column nitrogen low. Dirted tanks rely on soil to feed microorganisms and boost natural CO₂. But the key takeaway is simple:
Root tabs and expensive substrates are optional tools — not requirements.
Most aquatic plants can thrive by absorbing nutrients directly from the water column.
