We explain how to pull off the perfect three point turn (officially known as a turn in the road) every time.
miDrive's driving test manoeuvre videos are designed to give learner drivers an overview of what each manoeuvre consists of. They are for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to replace real-world driving lessons with a qualified driving instructor. This video will cover how to complete a three point turn, also known as a turn in the road.

Turn in the Road
1. Choose a safe place with no obstructions and a clear view of your surroundings. Indicate if necessary, and stop on the left hand side of the road as if you were parking.
2. Ensure the road is clear in front and behind you. Check your mirrors and blind spot over your right shoulder.
3. When you're sure it's safe to do so, use careful clutch control to move the car slowly forward and steer quickly to a full right lock.
4. Stop when you're around a metre from the kerb and then steer to your left until your wheels are straight. Apply your handbrake and select reverse gear.
5. Find your biting point and continue to check your mirrors and blind spot. Release the handbrake and steer very slowly to the left until the back wheels are around half a metre from the kerb.
6. Apply the handbrake, select first gear and check in all directions once more. Drive forward, turning the wheel slowly to the right.
7. As you straighten up on the left hand side of the road, turn the wheel back to the left so your wheels are facing forward. The manoeuvre is complete.
Top Tips:
Remember that not all roads have the same curve, or 'camber'. This means that some roads may slope towards the kerb more sharply than others, causing you to accidentally roll into the kerb if you're not careful.
Keep it slow; don't exceed walking speed.
Remember to position the vehicle, make your observations, and then manoeuvre.

About the three point turn / turn in the road (via Wiki)
The three-point turn is the informal name in the UK and Ireland for a driving manoeuvre commonly required in the practical part of driving tests. The UK and Irish formal name is the rather more laboriously phrased turning in the road (using forward and reverse gears). This is because an acceptable so-called "three point turn" may include more than three points.
The three-point turn is a method of reversing the direction of a vehicle when the road is too narrow for a U-turn. The basic manoeuvre consists of driving across the road turning towards the offside kerb, reversing across the road to the original nearside kerb while turning, and driving forward towards the original offside kerb, now the nearside. In a narrow road or with a longer vehicle the process may have to be repeated.
