Born in Kundrathur, Sekkizhar rose to become Prime Minister under Kulothunga Chola II, yet remained humble and devoted to Lord Shiva.
When the king was absorbed in worldly literature, Sekkizhar gently reminded him that devotion alone transforms the soul.
Challenged to write an epic worthy of Shiva’s devotees, Sekkizhar walked to Chidambaram, the cosmic stage of Lord Nataraja.
There, in divine grace, an Asareeri (celestial voice) uttered the sacred word “Ulakellām”, marking the miraculous beginning of the Periya Puranam.
Composed in flawless classical Tamil, this immortal work celebrates kings and farmers, hunters and washermen — all equal before Shiva through bhakti.
