According to the lighthouse directory, there are just under 19,000 lighthouses worldwide and here in Victoria, we’re visiting the oldest surviving, officially built lighthouse here on the Australian mainland. Cape Otway Lightstation.
Sitting adjacent to the Great Otway National Park, this remote location is not only home to rich history but also a well-preserved natural environment. It is as if the land has sat untouched for over 150 years ago. And as the centerpiece of the attraction, this still-working lighthouse serves as an emblem of early Victorian development.
Completed in 1848 and constructed of sandstone, this traffic sign of the sea is not only a source of national pride, it’s a beacon of hope.
And it is by the passion and effort of individuals like Alex Parry that the history of this place and its early visitors is still being shared today.
