Sack of Rome by Visigoths led by King Alaric in 410

Описание: A short documentary about the Sack of Rome which occurred on 24 August 410, and was done by the Visigoths led by King Alaric. Although labelled as a barbarian, Alaric was a Christian who received his military training in the Roman army. At that time, Rome was no longer the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The empire was lead at the time of the sack by emperor Honorius, son of Emperor Theodosius who died in 395. The most capable Roman commander, Flavius Stilicho, had been executed in 408, and the Roman army lacked an authentic leader. Alaric asked the emperor Honorius for money, food, and a land where to settle with his people inside the Empire. The Roman emperor sent an insulting answer to Alaric, and tried to get rid of him, which infuriated the Visigothic king. On the night of August 24, in the year 410, thousands of Visigoths made their way into Rome through the Porta Salaria. The invaders ravaged the city for three full days before departing with captives and plunder. This was the first time Rome had been sacked in 800 years.
